This summer my cat passed suddenly, just before his sixth birthday. He was my little boy, and meant so much to me. Not only as a much loved pet, but also as one of the last remainders of my fiancé who passed away suddenly a few years ago…. Recently I’ve been wanting to get another cat/kitten because I just really miss that having that special mischievous cat energy around me.
My hesitation is that my dog is 11 years old and mostly blind due to severe diabetes (she’s insulin resistant). She still has bursts of playful energy during the day and LOVES playing with cats. She literally raised my cat, sleeping in the pet bed snuggled up as soon as he came home and wrestling with him to play… But since she has lost her sight she’s sensitive to sudden movement/noises when she is relaxing and to changes in our routine. I know that she would be excited to have a kitten or young cat in the house, but I also think that the change could cause her to be stressed or to act out… I am prepared to work though any issues and to introduce her slowly to a new pet in the house, I just don’t want to end up in a position where I adopt a cat from our local shelter and then have to take it back (causing stress to the cat, and embarrassment for me).
If you have any advice and/or have been in a similar situation, I’d be glad for your comments. Thanks!
