I apologize for the length of this but its been extremely hard to find behavioral information about rats when it comes to specific situations
I raised this rat from birth, him as well as his 2 brothers. He is 2.5 years old and his brothers both passed away a little after their 2nd b-day. So he lives alone in a double critter nation. Plenty of space to run around. Since his brothers died I have noticed him slow down and become more lethargic.
He has always been a shy boy and he was the only one to never wanna come out of the cage. He always has the option to when I leave his cage open but he never does and just prefers pets from the door.
He's eating and drinking water just fine. He accepts the good snacks I give him. He has a little bit of breathing trouble and is getting fairly skinny (I've seen this before in another rat I had who was unrelated to him and was also fairly old) it doesn't seem to be impairing him as he still moves around, as much as any senior rat would.
This morning was different. I was getting ready to leave for work and I went to go check on him to make sure he had food and water. As soon as i opened his door he started running around his cage and climbing up the door to the top, running up my arm and shoulder like he had so much energy which is not normal for him. Ive never seen him move around this much since he was young. I was trying to move around his cage a little and get him a new box to play in bc I thought he might be bored. I shut his cage and he darts to the bottom half of the cage and is just panting hard with his mouth open. I was about to be running late for work so I put him back up top and left.
Is this like the old age bouta die dance? His brother kinda did something like this the day before he passed away. Seemingly fine, I was cleaning their cage and he started getting hype and playing with my hand jumping around (this was sorta his normal behavior though) next day he was gone
Thanks to anyone who takes their time to read this and gives me any helpful input
