Adopted a cat in late december, other cats still having truble with the new one.

Back in late December I adopted a cat from the animal shelter. He's a big 6 year old and slightly overweight boy. There were 2 other cats in the house before him, a female that's about 1 and a half years old and a male that's a year old now. The adopted cat gets along fine with the female after slowing getting them comfortable with each other, and we're comfortable letting them out together. They've even started playing with each other recently.

The problem is the male cat who is hostile when around the new cat. The adopted cat thankfully is very standoffish and doesn't want to fight (he usually tries to lay where he is and stand his ground when being intimidated but will sometimes run and hide). Whenever they are able to see each other the one year old will try his hardest to sneak behind him to attack, and will constantly jerk twords him to provoke him/scare him. It's been over a month now and the one year old cat is still hostile. I'm not sure what to do other than keep having them interact through a gate or short spans of being monitored in the same room (we break up any hissing/growling and try to not let it get physical), but after more than a month not much seems to have changed. We've made sure they have something to smell of each other, we've separated the female from the introductions, tried feeding them both with a gate separating them (the 1 year old just stairs at the 6 year old instead of eating), they do paw play under the door but by the sound of it the one year old has his claws out, and if the 6 year old gets too close to the gate the 1 year old will try to swipe at him with claws out.

I'm not sure what next step should be taken to make is so the adopted cat is able to feely roam the house without having to worry about the other one terrorising or attacking him.
