Advice for brushing a cat?

How do I know when to stop? How can I brush an uncooperative cat?

I know these are dumb questions, but I have two cats, one of which is giving me problems and I was never taught how to properly care for these animals past the basic food, water, and litter.

When I try to brush my problem cat, his fur never stops coming. No matter how long I can manage to get him to stay still long enough for a brush, and no matter how long I try even just to get one area free of excess fur, it just doesn't stop. He's perfectly healthy as far as I can tell, just he's a shedding machine.

The other problem is he often becomes uncooperative after a few minutes and starts to try to attack, play with, or hold the brushes and my hands. Or he gets up and starts headbutting and rubbing me, refusing to sit or lay back down. I can't get him to calm down and can't continue after that.

He's what I would call a 'generic' cat, the ones with the m on their forehead. You know the ones, if that helps.

I live in Aus and I don't want him to suffer when it gets hot from an excess of fur. He doesn't leave the house, too. As an aside detail.

His sister doesn't have any of these issues, except if I try to brush her and my hand gets too close to her mouth, she'll start trying to lick me.

Sorry again if this is dumb or the wrong place.
