Advice on my dog on car trips? (Long post)

A little back story: I've had him for around 5 years. He was a rescue dog and the previous owners were abusive (we don't know the full extent) but even today he is scared of newspapers/carrier bags being rustled. He's also very temperamental around the house and when being walked i.e. he doesn't like other dogs or people around. Due to this he isn't walked as much as I'd like to as it makes me very anxious constantly watching for other people or dogs in the vicinity of us.

Anyway to the advice I'm needing! I've recently bought a better muzzle and harness so thought I'd go somewhere spacious to walk him and give him a free run (around a 20 minute drive.) Throughout the entire car journey he just cried and cried. I stopped and gave him his toy, his blanket, even stroked him. As soon as I began driving again the crying continued. Once at the destination he was fine and enjoyed the walk and run but as soon as we were on the journey home the crying began again.

Anyone have any advice they can give? It would be really appreciated!
