I have been a long time cat owner and need some insight on a peculiar happening. Apologies for the length in advance - just want to give as much info as possible.
I have 2 adult female cats - one 12 and one almost 10. Both fixed, and have lived together for almost all of their lives - get along most of the time with cuddles and bathing each other. Both healthy.
For I would say the past almost 5 years, one of them (yet to have caught either of them in the act) will poop outside of the liter box. FWIW it’s very rarely - maybe 4 times a year (sometimes less, sometimes more). And I feel like it’s only one and not both that do it.
It’s never anywhere near the box; usually on a bathroom rug or a small kitchen rug, in another room. Never on our bed or couch or even their kitty beds/blankets.
It has never been urine, only feces. Should also note that the poops are normal - no diarrhea, mucus, blood, etc. I don’t have any reason to believe it’s a medical issue. Neither cat exhibit any other signs of distress, it happens quite infrequently, and both get seen by a vet regularly.
It feels spiteful because it is in plain sight and not under a bed or in a corner of a closet. Also because it’s often happened while I’ve been away for work for extended periods of time, so maybe my roommate or fiancé isn’t giving one of them the attention that they get from me, their doting mama? (Then again it happened once recently and I was home alone with them for days and I had just left to go to the store).
The only thing I can think is that it seems to happen most frequently when someone is changing things up in the apartment: either we’re unpacking (or packing) and there’s luggage and piles of clothes that aren’t normally out, or recently we had brought some stuff in from storage and were unpacking that so there was a bit of a mess for a few hours.
Do cats poop out of spite or dominance? I’ve found mixed thoughts on the ‘webs.
I’ve heard of cats refusing to use a dirty box, but this isn’t the case here. Our box is automatic and we always change the tray before it gets full. No new liter either. It also doesn’t change location and they both use it without incident the other 97% of the time.
I’m totally perplexed. Any thoughts/suggestions are welcome and appreciated.
