I have an 8/9 year old female orange tabby and a 9 month old male tuxedo kitten.
Essentially, Marmalade (tabby) is a princess and loves to drink water out of cups. That's been her thing since we got her about 7 years ago. She drank water from a gravity water fountain for a few years when I was living with my in-laws and they had two poodles and another cat. But she still always loved and preferred cups.
Enter McCoy (tuxedo). This cat is an asshole and likes to knock shit over. His favorite thing to knock over? You guess it - cups with water in them. We tried everything to get the cups to stay, including sticky tack and tape, but somehow this little terror still manages to knock it over. My husband and I got sick of wet carpet, so we went out and bought a fountain that has a running trickle.
McCoy absolutely loves it, but I haven't seen Marmalade anywhere near it. I'll put out cups for her and she runs up and acts like she hasn't drank in weeks. My husband is of the opinion that we should just leave it alone, that she's not that stupid and won't purposely dehydrate herself. I feel opposite, that we should gradually reduce access to the cups, but McCoy always knocks them over when we're not looking or home.
To answer any questions, the fountain is well away from their food and I switched them to wet food just yesterday to give Marmalade some water.
Any tips to get my spoiled princess to drink from a fountain?
