First time cat owner/servant to be. What do I need to know?

I work from 8-4 5 days a week and want a pet to keep me company during the rest of the day. I've had at least one dog (usually 2) when I lived with my family for the past 25 years, and so I feel like something is missing while being pet-less. I live in an apartment and I feel like a dog would just go batty living in that space being alone for so long. So I'm looking at getting a pair of kittens from a local rescue.

The only experience I've had with cats is some house-sitting as my dad is allergic to them (which isn't much of a factor to me as his parents and sister are allergic to dogs soooo yeah). I love the sassy attitude they seem to have (reminds me of one of my dogs), as well as the closeness you have with them. What do I need to know about picking out cats? (are siblings good? what about a mother and a kitten?) How can I get them used to litter boxes and controlling their behaviour? They will strictly be indoors cats as well. What else do I need to know/consider before pulling the trigger?
