Help! I regret getting a cat :(

So we got a cat two days ago and I'm panicking. I'm worried we made a mistake and I'm not sure what to do. We have two little girls and a dog, and we've talked about getting a cat for some time. My girls absolutely love cats, but thought we should wait until they're a bit older (they're 3 and 7). Then a week ago my husband's co-worker asked around the office to see if anyone could take her cat because her allergies we getting bad. We met him and he's very sweet, has lived around dogs and kids, and he's declawed (which is something I wouldn't do personally, but I have to say it is a bonus since I don't have to worry about him scratching my kids). I told my husband I didn't feel ready for more responsibility since we have two kids and a dog, but he convinced me the cat was the right one for us. So I caved.

Now I'm filled with regret. The cat is extremely clingy to the point of it being suffocating, and I know he's scared and has been through a lot in the past few days, but I'm worried this is just the way he is. I dunno, it's just a lot of change and I'm freaking out. Is it normal to feel this way after getting a new pet? And how long do I give it before I know whether or not we made the right decision? Please no judgement--we're taking great care of him and will continue to do so, and if it doesn't work out we'll find him another loving home. Any advice?
