So we got into our new place which means we got our dog back from a friend who had been taking care of her for ~a year while we bunkered down and house hunted - but now my wife has gone back to work after maternity leave, and we've been having to keep my dog at home alone for 8+ hours at a time. The situation feels untenable.
She's a Pit Bull - and she's great - but she's neurotic, and has anxiety. I just plain feel terrible leaving her - she starts to shake as we leave in the morning. She doesn't touch her food until we come back.
She's also started scratching at the doors and causing damage to the property. Which she hasn't done since she was 2-3 years old - she's going on 7 now. There may also be some jealousy issues with the kids/new baby.
To top it - our house insurance doesn't allow her breed - and we're not sure what to do but to lie if they for whatever reason get whiff of the scenario.
As much as I'd hate to admit it - the short of it is that I feel like the situation is bad for our dog and bad for us. I thought about hiring a dog-walker to take her out at lunchtime but I don't think we can afford it - and sometimes I can work from home... but the damage to the property when I can't do that is kind of a nail in the coffin for her - my wife just can't abide it while she's in nesting mode.
So I guess what I'm asking is - what is the proper way to give up your dog? Especially for a Pit Bull - I don't want to give her away to just anyone. I've questioned family/friends, but no one can take her. She's a handfull.
Where do I go from here? Do I call the local shelter? I feel like I need to vet the people coming around for her.
