Don't know if this is the right sub to post this in, I'll xpost in r/askvet to be sure.
One of my partner's workmates is looking to rehome a cat. His name is Benny and he's a handsome 2yo ginger boy whose elderly owner has unfortunately passed away.
Now my partner and I have always been pet people, I've owned cats since childhood and will never forget my first beautiful tabby man Galahad. The issue is we've just bought a 3 bedroom unit that borders on parklands and don't know if this is a suitable environment for Benny.
A couple of people have told us that as a fully matured male he may not cope to the readjustment and if he got out he may not come back.
Our questions are:
-have people rehomed cats around 2yo? How have they adjusted?
-is it possible to still let Benny out to stretch his furry hams during the day for short amounts of time?
-what have people done when their cat has been unable to adjust to new surroundings?
-in the next couple of years we're planning on getting a dog as well, would this cause problems?
Now this may be a provacative point for this sub and I don't want it to consume the replies but it definitely is worth mentioning. I've always had a lax policy with my cats adventuring outside, but in the past I've lived in built up residential areas so haven't had the ethical dilemma of him getting out and butchering wildlife.
We're worried that given our circumstances we are maybe wondering if we can provide adequate care or if we should wait for someone in a better position to rescue him instead.
If it makes a difference we're from AUS so there are plenty of lethal (to cats) predators in our parks, like the tiger snake, mixed in with our plentiful defenseless bush mouse species. The Aus government had cracked down on cats after a number of bandicoot species were hunted to extinction in central Australia.
