Just adopted a 3 year old cat that appears to be scared of our dog. Tips?

I'm having some trouble with the right search words so forgive me if I'm asking a question for the hundredth time.

We just brought home a cat from the local shelter. He's approx. 3 years old. But we have a dog (who had no problem with our previous cat), and the new cat appears to really hate dogs.

For the time being we will be keeping Francis (the cat) in our bedroom. But Rocco (dog) was just outside the room when my wife came in. Rocco was outside the closed door when Francis noticed and he bit my wife's shin. Hard.

He's obviously terrified and directed his aggression to her.

So now we need to figure out how to properly get him acclimated to Rocco.

The aggression is what worries me a little. We have kids (two 8 year olds), so I don't want him to bite them like he did my wife. But I can't keep him fully separated.

Obviously, the shelter does not want me to simply bring him back without at least giving it a chance. But neither do I. Which will take a good week at first. So I'll take any advice I can get to make this as smooth as possible.

It's important to note we can only keep Francis in our bedroom and simply keep the dog out. But we cannot keep the kids out.

Also, I just went out to the dog and made sure my hands smelled like him. Then went back to Francis. He did not seem to have much of a problem. So I really think it has more to do with his presence than his smell.
