I'm just looking for some advice or maybe some reassurance.
After years of wanting a cat, my boyfriend and I adopted our first little orange scruffball back in May of last year.
We made sure to do lots of research beforehand to avoid a lot of the common mistakes with raising kittens. We have two litter boxes that we clean regularly, a scratching post and a cat tree, lots and LOTS of toys, a feeding schedule, etc. We absolutely do not believe in physical punishment, only positive reinforcement or redirecting her attention if she's doing something bad. It's worked out really good and she's pretty well-behaved.
The thing is, she doesn't like getting randomly picked up or pet. If you do, she will gnaw at your hand until you put her down or stop. However, usually when we're relaxing, she will sometimes jump on us and become the most snuggly cat in the world. Kneading us, rubbing her face against us, and purring really loud. The same thing happens when it's bedtime and she comes to sleep on our pillows.
The reason I'm bringing this up is because whenever we have friends over, they always try to pick her up and pet her and then complain when she bites them. Our roommate does this too, and then says that his 4 cats at home aren't like this. They say she's a 'bitey' cat. I tell them that she just prefers to be left alone, but they make it sound like it's not normal for her to be like this.
Am I worrying for no reason? Does my cat just have her own preferences, or did we make a mistake in raising her? This is our first time raising a cat, and we just want to make sure we're doing it right.
