My small dog is being assaulted by a group of outdoor/stray(?) cats. What can I do?

First time poster so I apologize for any possible rule-breaking or poor formatting.

My 2 year old 25 LB mutt has now been attacked by these cats on four different occasions. Originally I thought she may have been asking for it and I only believed there to be an issue with one cat. Last week I heard my dog bark twice and go silent. I figured she saw a squirrel. Moments later she was whining and squealing and as I ran outside I saw that these three cats had pinned my dog down and were clawing the shit out of her. I scared them all off and my dog was okay besides some scratches which I cleaned up and took care of.

This issue obviously isn’t going to resolve itself and my dog is too small to fight back. How do I deal with these cats in a proper way? None of them had collars and were all too fast for me to catch anyways and we don’t live especially close to town.
