Need advice for cat living with my mom

I’ve recently needed to move my 2-3 yr old neutered male short-hair cat to live with my mom in a southern US state. He’s been living with me for over a year further north. He’ll be spending a couple months with my mom, but the first week has not been going well at all.

While with me he has been an extremely affectionate, if high-maintenance cat. He accepts any amount of scratching and tummy-rubbing without getting upset. He has a lot of energy and typically needs to have a toy thrown around for a bit a few times a day or he will be up all night.

When I brought him to live with my mom he was behaving totally normally. He did very well on the flight and only seemed a little stand-offish to my mom while I was around (not unusual for people he’s meeting).

Now that I’ve left though he is not behaving well and I am looking for advice. He has peed on a rug, he stands on his back legs and swipes at my mom, he spent some hours sitting out on the porch getting drenched in the rain (never done anything remotely like that before).

He’s eating normally though and has had only the one accident. When we face-timed he seemed to be behaving normally (no real change in behavior when he heard my voice or saw me in the phone).

Is he just adjusting badly to my being gone? How can we help him behave like he normally does? Any tips for how my mom might be able to change her own behavior to make him more comfortable?

Thanks
