I apologize for the incoming rant, but I’m pretty emotional right now.
Why do so many people treat vet visits as if they are unnecessary? I took my dog to the vet a couple of weeks ago for a check-up, but no one around me can seem to fathom the idea that pets should have check-ups too. The standard response I’ve gotten when talking about taking him to the vet has been “Aww, what’s wrong with him?” In addition to that, I know several people who won’t even take their pets to the vet in the event of an emergency or a chronic condition.
I get that it’s expensive. I really do. I’m dealing with trying to find low-cost vet clinics to take care of my dog’s teeth since the estimate I got from the vet I saw last time was astronomical. I know perfectly well the struggle of those who can’t afford to take their animals to the vet. What gets me, though, is the fact that so many people are so casual about it. It absolutely breaks my heart. The thought of not being able to take care of a pet causes me immense grief and guilt, so much so that after my dog passes, I won’t be getting another pet until I know I’m in a position that I can take care of it properly. If I’m never in that position, so be it. I’m not going to put an innocent animal in that position. I’m not going to potentially let something else suffer just so I can have companionship. But so many people I talk to, including my family, scoff at the idea that I would purposely forgo a pet just because of costs. They don’t believe that someone would willingly do so. But then again, the cost of keeping pets to them extends only to food costs.
It just makes me sad. These wonderful animals are innocent beings that depend on us for care. I just personally can’t handle the idea of one of them suffering because I couldn’t afford to provide for its medical needs. I just don’t understand.
