Senior pup question! My dachshund mix is 13.5. He’s been on furosemide (diuretic for heart) for about 6 weeks now. He’s had great results - more energy, loss of weight from fluid that was retained passing through.
Last night, he was up most of the night trying to wake us up, trying to get onto the bed. He was restless but VERY happy - huge tail wags and it seemed like he just wanted to chill with someone. We took him out a few times through the night, and he went to pee, but he was still restless and wanting to party. This NEVER happens. Boy is a sound sleeper and NEVER wakes in the night to pee or party.
This morning, there was a tiny puddle of pee in the house, which is extremely unlike him. My husband and I began to theorize that maybe he had accidentally given him the diuretic twice last night, causing the random behavior. We called the vet to see and they said that these behaviors don’t sound like side effects (Which I really disagree with, I’m thinking the receptionist got the message mixed up to the doc? We never spoke to the doc directly). Since this morning, he has had 3 other accidents in the house. I’ve been home all day with a sick kid, so he’s been out plenty of times. The urine doesn’t smell foul at all. It’s a normal color. I don’t suspect UTI.
So that leaves us with the possible diuretic overdose (would have happened 24 hours ago and he just peed in the house again 15 min ago). Or, incontinence. I know senior pups become incontinent over time, but I assumed it would be just that....over time. Not literally overnight.
Anyone dealt with incontinence that is THIS sudden? Or is it gradual?
