Hello, Reddit. I am asking for help here because Google gave me no luck.
I just adopted a kitten, at first I fed her dry food but her appetite wasn't as good as when I fed her wet food. So I feed her kitten wet food that I mix with salmon puree and milk for kitten. She loves it so much and eats a lot, and I'm happy.
When I fed her dry food, to anticipate ants coming, I placed the bowl inside a bigger bowl and filled it with water. And it worked, no ants got in the dry food even when it stayed there for hours long. Yesterday, I fed her wet food as usual but I had to go outside so I left it by replacing the dry food with wet food inside the same bigger bowl filled with water. When I got home, to my surprise, small red ants got in the bowl and surrounding the food area. I have no idea how the ants could swim inside.
At this point when I was home my cat just stayed far, in the corner at the other side of where the ants were. I cleaned everything, no more ants, but when I fed her, she hesitated, I had to offer the food multiple times until she ate just a little, like only licking the food 5-6 times, stopped, and kept sweeping the floor surface with her paws. This has happened for three meal times now and I am worried because now she doesn't want to eat wet food, yet she also doesn't like dry food.
How do I get her to eat this wet food again and make her really see the ants are gone and that she doesn't need to sweep the ants away?
And about prevention, I learned my lessons and I will only provide wet food during meal times, and clean it once done. I won't leave it unattended again.
I just need to get her to eat again.
