When to say goodbye...

My dog is 14 years old and we have reached the difficult part of loving a pet which means figuring out when is the right time to say goodbye. We have been told by the vet that he has severe arthritis in his hips, lost muscle mass, liver disease and kidney disease. Basically, there’s nothing we can really do for him other than give daily medication and a renal diet. His arthritis seemed fairly controlled by medicine until recently. He now has trouble going up the stairs (and sometimes sleeps on the first floor because he can’t get up the stairs) and gets tired after about a 10 minute walk. He is incontinent. Today he has had 3 bouts of diarrhea and has already overflowed his diaper twice.

The problem I’m having is most of the time when he is around me he seems happy and he’s still eating. His smiling face makes me think I would only be choosing this for my convenience. Any thoughts or similar experiences would be appreciated. You always think you will know when it’s time but it turns out you never do.
