Why does my cat stand on my foot?

There's a number of things my cat does that I don't understand, but I often have a good point of speculation. Like my guess as to why she goes over to some corner (always a corner) in the apartment stares up at the ceiling and meows is because the snow on the roof is melting and the roof is settling (or squirrels; they're real gutsy around here, and learned they can crack wallnuts open by hucking them at the paved walkways).

One cat behavior I've never quite understood is why they step on my foot. It's not just this one cat, this is actually my second cat that does this. One was a tabby, this one's a tuxedo. One was quiet and stoic, this one is a talker and a lounger. One was a leaper, this one's a climber. Both were fairly active though.

They approach me, calmy, tail straight up, ears forward, brush their face against my shin (a friendly greeting), and then stand on my foot for about a solid second or so with one of their hind paws. Never any claws, nothing unfriendly, it's just like they're trying to leave a dent in my foot in the shape of their paw.

The less energetic and playful cats I've lived with (more of the lounging kind of cat than a troublemaker) don't do it, though.

Anyone have a clue?
