I live with my girlfriend in the PNW region (near Portland). I just moved here for my first sales job (I am 24 shes 22), shes a nurse assistant.
Experience with pets: We have a two bedroom town home and want a pet because we are both experienced pet owners. I've had parakeets, a cockatiel (bird), various freshwater fish, currently have a Labrador that I raised for 9 years, had to leave her with dad in California (she loves him more than me + he is pretty wealthy and can get her what ever luxury she wants/needs). My girlfriend has had dogs, birds, a gecko, a few guinea pigs.
My work schedule is a standard 8-5. Hers will be similar 4 days on 2 days off. We are avoiding dogs and cats right now because my salary is somewhat entry level and I want to be able to take care of a dog/cat 360 + I want some more freedom than they require.
We were considering:
Fish: Either beta fish or a simple 10 gallon aquarium , not very rewarding but helps to have something else in the house
Hamster: Ive had one before that I took care of for a year for a friend, friend reported he started stinking after a year or two of having him back.
Birds: Shorter life span birds (parakeets or cockatiels). 5-10 years down the road I want to own dogs and only dogs, and I dont want like a macaw or something that will out live me most likely.
Guinea Pigs: Idk anything about these guys except that their cages can get big
Turtles: Ive seen these guys swim around at petco but I dont know if I can do anything with these guys
Ferrets: I like how playful these guys get, but from reddit im reading that these guys stink a lot. Also Im a bit of a summer traveler and not sure how hard it is to get a baby sitter. For our dog I can post on rover.com or facebook and the world begs to watch her while we are out.
Overall goals:
- Something to play with
- Maintenance, clean tank/cage/what ever once a week'ish
- Not too long of a life span, but not too short
Feel free to chip in ideas if you can
