We have a cat that’s dealt with a dog all his life. This same dog passed in June last year.
So we get word that there’s this dog who’s got it rough and will go to shelter if the owner can’t find any soon to take care of it. We decide to check it out and this is the sweetest dog we’ve met. She even knows how to mouth! We decide to take her since it was a good fit for us.
Well when we get home, we try to introduce the cat and dog and it’s going okay as first meets go: sniffing and smelling each other. Callie (dog) is in a leash and Fig (cat) is being held. It’s all fine until Callie gentle snaps at Fig and he understandably hisses.
We got Callie over 2 weeks ago and her and Fig still don’t seem to get along. I know it’s not right to force a dog and cat to get along, but I figured my cat would be chill about a new dog. It’s almost like the roles are reversed, Callie is curious and Fig won’t budge. I really feel bad for Fig since he’s obviously scared.
The owner has said the dog is okay with cats. It stayed with one for a week with no problems. I still wanted to bring Fig, but no one else wanted to bother taking him with us so I pretty much had no chance of getting him since he hides and runs away from me. (I don’t know why but he’s always done this.)
Right now we keep Fig upstairs and he’s safe with food, water and his litter box and a gate at the top of the stairs so he’s safe. Callie is of course downstairs. At night we let Callie upstairs since every one is upstairs too. Fig then hides under my parents bed and hisses at Callie whenever she’s nearby. I’m not 100% certain, but I’m pretty sure she is just curious and doesn’t have intentions of actually hurting him. Callie’s very playful which I think Fig doesn’t like, but how’s he supposed to know she doesn’t pose a threat? Sorry for the rambling.
TLDR: Got a new dog a few weeks ago that’s supposedly okay with cats. Have a cat that’s lives it’s life with a dog. Dog and cat are not getting along still.
