Cat surgery costs

Hello. I’m posting here because I am so completely at a loss for what to do. My cat Jinkx, who I’ve cat for one year, was recently diagnosed with gingivitis, resorptive lesions, and possibly stomatitis. She was diagnosed by our normal vet, who referred us to a specialist. We paid $135 just to see the specialist, who we saw for literally less than two minutes, and she told us we’d have to get a $3000-$4500 surgery performed to get her teeth out. That’s...a lot of money for two 20 year olds to pay for a cat. I myself haven’t seen a doctor or dentist in about three years. We just can’t afford it, even with both of us working full time, decent jobs. The vet doesn’t have a payment plan. They suggested we take out a credit card for it. I am just now paying my way out of debt from the past few years. I am not getting a credit card. I know that people say you shouldn’t adopt a pet unless you can afford it, and we do take her to the vet yearly and put flea medication on her and feed her well and groom her, but are we being terrible people for not getting the procedure done? She still eats fine and hasn’t shown any outward symptoms of pain at all—the diagnoses was quite a shock for us—and we’re supplementing her kibble with softer foods as well, just so she has some choice. We’re going to go see a few other vets to see if the price changes to something more reasonable at a different animal hospital.

Tl;dr my cat needs a $4000 surgery that I can’t afford, what do I do? Am I bad person for not putting myself in debt for an animal?

Edit: the vet also said there was only a 60-80% chance the surgery would decrease her pain, and also a 50% she’d die on the table, bc she’s never had surgery before. She was incredibly vague with how serious the disease is or how it would effect her in the future. She didn’t present us with literally any option except surgery.
