I'm a soon-to-be mother and I need help with my cat

Hi everyone,

I have a wonderful (almost) 7-year-old cat and I'm currently pregnant with my first baby. My cat used to sleep in my bed until a few weeks ago, when my husband and I decided to change that in order to make our bedroom more safe for the baby in the crib. Since we know this is going to be a big change for everyone, we wanted to do it before the baby arrived and hopefully our cat would get used to this.

The first few days went by okay, with minor scratches on the door and meowing but lately it has gotten worse and worse. This week I've barely had any good sleep and I'm worried about how to handle this situation. Our cat has everything he needs, plenty of space in the house, food and water are always checked before bedtime and we make sure we pet him for quite a while before going to bed. Nothing works, the cat always comes scratching our door and meowing like crazy.

In the worst nights, after a while, we put him in the kitchen where it has access to everything he needs, plus another sleeping bed. We do this because it's the farthest point of the house from our bedroom and we get to hear him less. I still feel awful about all of this but I know it's necessary. We simply can't risk having a 8kg cat in our bedroom that can be dangerous to the baby. And I'm not saying that it would be something "on purpose", it can simply be that with his own weight it can smother my child.

I just want for all of us in our family to be happy and safe. I love my cat very much and I really want to make a smooth transition between this different stage in life and our old ways...

P.S.: We are changing to another house in a month, I'm hoping things will go smoother in a new place where he still isn't territorial about.
