Need help. Cat acting funny and I don't know why.

My boss got a couple of kittens a few months back and I'm worried one of them may have accidentally gotten into some chemicals and been poisoned. They are supposed to be mousers, and I don't know much about cats, so I think they are American short hairs. Both are female, about 3-6 months old I think, and both came from the same little. They are very social and can be seen often playing with each other, or napping together. Both my boss and his wife treat them like employees, and never really pet or play with them, but I do every chance I get. That's how I noticed one of them acting funny.

When ever I pet it, it starts purring. Normal I know, but after a minute or so it starts sputtering like a dying engine. Sometimes it sound like it's coughing or choking instead of purring, and it gets worse the louder she purrs. The moment you stop petting or playing with her though, she stops purring, and also stops sputtering. She also tends to rattle her tail like a rattlesnake, whenever she wants attention.

Please I really like these cats, but they aren't mine, and I don't have approval to just catnap her and take her to the vet. I'm afraid she might have gotten into rat poison, or eaten a rat or mouse that did. Does this sound right, or do you need more info? Also is this even the right play to post this?

Thanks in advance.
