Road tripping with a cat

So I'm a few weeks away from moving to another state. I'll be renting a car and taking a ~2000 mile road trip with a cat. I'm curious if anyone has any experience with this?

I'll be bringing a cage just in case, but given it is a ~5 day trip, I'm hoping she'll calm down after a bit and I'll be able to set up some blankets and let her chill on a seat.

She's over 20 years old and has a bowel disease, and needs to use the litter box frequently. I've been looking for a sort of spill-proof litter box that'll fit securely in the back seat, and is filtered to avoid smoking me out when she uses it. Does anything come to mind?

I'm also looking for hotel chains that allow cats. I've noticed that some which allow "pets" really just means "dogs".
