I have a 13 yr old male cat who used to be the neighborhood bully, putting all other cats in their place, full of energy. In his old age he has calmed and enjoyed sitting outside in the sun or finding a nice spot in the bush to chill out all day.
We moved house so we kept him inside for a couple of weeks using kitty litter. He never tried to go outside or even go near the door to outside, he was happy in sitting in his little spot in the back corner of one of the rooms.
He's on medication for his kidneys and is prone to UTI's so he often pees a lot. A few weeks ago he pee'd all over our office (where he has a little hiding spot in the corner) and we still cant get rid of the smell. Hes also peed in his beds and sleeps in his litter sometimes. The amount he pees is costing me a fortune in litter so I thought it was about time he get used to the outside again.
I opened up the door in front of him and he went out happily straight away, did some exploring and came back an hour later. The next day I opened the door up for him and he happily went out again, this time for a few hours.
However, he suddenly decided he doesn't want to. Literally all he does is sleep and eat. I'm with him 24/7 and he barely even changes position in his bed. Whenever I pick him up out of his bed to put him nearer to the door he growls at me and runs back to his bed. He used to love being outside and I hate that he's in here looking miserable all day every day.
It seems silly but I'm barely able to afford to pay for as much litter as I am, not on top of medications for 3 different medications plus vet visits for him. I also have our first house inspection coming up (we're renting) and our whole house smells like cat piss. I would really like him to get outside more not just for him but for my bank account and carpet too! Anyone have any tips?
TLDR; moved house and my 13 year old cat went outside a few times, now he refuses to go out but is miserable inside. He pees a lot both in and out of litter box, I cant get rid of the smell and have a house inspection coming up.
