Advice about new dog? He is adopted.

Hello everyone, my family and I seem to have a few issues with our newly adopted dog. He is a golden retriever of about 7-8 years of age, found on the streets and surrendered to a shelter. We have no idea about his backstory but he is a very kind gentle dog when it comes to humans/kids and oddly enough, cats. We have a 10 years old siamese and he loves him (one sided love but still). The issue is that he is very aggresive towards other dogs, clearly hasnt been socialized properly as a puppy but we never thought a retriever of all breeds would present such a problem. He has attacked two dogs without provocation (a smaller female labrador and a poodle) and bit them. It was almost impossible to get him off these two dogs and i think he would have hurt them badly without intervention. The poodle was being carried by its owner and he literally jumped to snatch it from him. He is larger than average (around 42 kg) and very hard to control when he is like this. Any advice? We will get a muzzle in order to prevent further attacks but i fear the worst. Can a dog that age be trained by a proffesional? We are too afraid to let him near any dogs anywhere. Thanks and sorry about any bad english, not my first tongue.
