I adopted two cats recently, a 3.5 year old female and a 2 year old male. I had adopted them three weeks apart but they used to live together. They still have their fights after 1 month and a week, mostly when he wants to play with her and she doesnt or when he wants to cuddle with her. But that is the extent of it really. She always growls and hisses at him when tries that, but yesterday she licked his head which was significant.
After having them for about 3 weeks, I decided to drop down from two litters to one litter, but I noticed things happening and then after a week of only one litter the female decided to pee on my bed. Obviously 1 litter was not enough so I decided to buy a brand new one, and for the past week I had no incidents....until this morning. Where I saw her climb on the bed and her body language said it all.
Some history- I originally had two litters (her old one with no cat door on it, and a new one with a cat door). They used both but they frequented the no-door litter. I had no issues with them using them. The two cats have their fights still as I said, but I know this peeing out of the litter is not related to territory or anything like that because it would have happened early on when I first brought the male home, and it would be a more common occurance.
I suspect two possible things are to blame. Either after a week, the litter boxes start to smell a bit to her due to the cat doors so she decided the bed was better, or the fact that I bought an AC unit and the box currently sits in a way that might block the second litter and make her feel unsafe, and since the other litter was used this morning she did not like it so decided the bed was better.
I managed to catch it and clean it up, but I decided to try and leave the bedroom door open for them today (as I live in an apartment with the two of them) to give them some space, to see what happens later today. I let them on the bed to come and cuddle and say hi, so based on everything I have encountered and seen, and read online, I suspect the litters just need to be cleaned out and dumped weekly when they have the cat doors on them.
Has anyone else had a similar encounter and what have you done to stop the cat from going on the bed? I think a simple litter box purge will solve it, but anything else to make the bed an unappealing place to potty would be great!
