Warning: long post:
For about 3 - 4 months now I have been dealing with a flea infestation all thanks to my dogs groomer (well, ex-groomer now I’m NEVER taking them back there after this!).
Anyway some may ask how did a dog groomer start a flea infestation in your home? Well the night before a family member was nice enough to help me out and take two out of my 3 dogs and 1 kitty cat to the groomers for me (I couldn’t at the time), well I had been using this same groomer since I got my youngest pup (who’s almost 9 yrs) was big enough to need to be groomed. They’ve never been my fave (super slow service, rude workers etc). I get 2 of my babies back home (keep in mind before they left they were COMPLETELY flea free (I do a good job checking them during bathes not a single flea on them or in the house). Well that night (note both dogs are Maltese and I get the “puppy cut on them, especially during hot weather) so they’re kept with short coats. When I get them back I guess the family member just picked them up and didn’t see the thick moving line of fleas from their neck to the base of their little tails. Yup groomer sent them back HEAVILY infested and we’ve been dealing with it ever since. Now the little bastards are all over the house and all the pets (cat included and she’s strictly a indoor cat so only place she could get them is from the dogs. We’ve already had a major health scare about a month and a half - months ago where the smallest dog (miniature Maltese) was just lifeless pretty much so her “human daddy” rushed her to the emergency vet late at night, she was having organ failures and vet said she was literally on deaths door (it was brought on by the fleas). Thankfully they managed to save her and she’s back home. I don’t want that to happen to any of the other fur babies in the house I would love these jumping bitting blood sucking bastards dead and gone ASAP.
Few key things: bathed them with stuff that’s safe to use on pets (I checked a lot before using it I don’t want to hurt my fur babies. They’ve been to the vet about it and they gave them some meds (flea pills) the issue got better but BOOM got worse again :(. We’ve got more of the same flea meds the vet gave them twice now but poor babies are still dealing with them :( .
Got a few questions
Questions: how can we get rid of these bastards, we’ve tried random pet friendly sprays, flea and tick shampoos, bathing them in dawn dish soap, flea meds (vet said use Capstar for all 3 dogs and cat). Which I have.
I read on a few sires to set traps around your home consisting of a mixture of water and dawn dish soap with a lamp near it, especially at night well I’ve been wanting to try this but I’ve been afraid if I sit them around were fleas are bad (and heavy traffic areas for the pets I was afraid the dogs (not so much the cat since she only drinks water from her water bowl or the sink (ever since she was big enough to jump on the sink she will jump up their and meow till I turn the water on for her). Anyway I sat one of those traps in my room and keep the pets out of it (using a flashlight instead of a lamp), worked last night caught about 12 of those pests). Had no idea there was that many in my room cause I kept it shut off from the pets (normally I let them in there but since I didn’t want a flea infested bed (and they all love my bed), well the two that can jump on it lol didn’t want a flea infested bed.
I always look my legs, clothes etc over before entering my room hoping to keep the pest out (which I guess don’t work since I cought so many in that trap last night. Anyway sorry for such a long post I’ll get to the point.
Is those dawn dish soap traps safe to sit around high pet traffic areas?
And another question, two of my family members let the dogs sleep with them (one pet in one bed, 2 in the other (one used to sleep with me before this flea issue, but since the issue I don’t let him (miss my bed buddy at night). Well even if the poor pups have flea the two family members NEVER get them on them or get bit up by them, whereas I, I can’t even walk up and down the hall or stand near the dogs without those jumping bastards jumping on my legs and trying to hitch a ride (or bite me, one of my legs has red spots/bites all over it from them pests. Dunno why they go for me, is there anything I can rub/spray on me (legs and feet) to keep those bastards off me? I read they hate certain smells (coconut being one), well closest thing I had was some Bath and Body Works Coconut body spray, I was so annoyed I sprayed it all over my legs, feet heck even my shoes which seemed to work, until I ran out and the closest place that sells it is like a 3 - 4 hour drive away and currently don’t have my car so that’s out. Well I read rubbing alcohol, they hate that (a family member even told me to rub that on my legs but I hate the smell of it so I didn’t, until the other night (before setting up the trap) I couldn’t get to my bed before they started jumping on me. I got so annoyed by that I tried the rubbing alcohol (didn’t work). Is there anything I can rub/spray on my legs to keep them off me?
Thanks for taking the time to read my lengthy post and any help/tips/advice is greatly appreciated!
