My cat is a 9yo rescue cat. I got him in high school, and he lived with my parents while I was in college, but I have since graduated and have brought him to live at my new house.
My parents were very strict and had an open door policy for bedrooms, so my cat was able to wander the house whenever and wherever he wished. I close and lock the door when I sleep at my new place (I have housemates), but I let my cat sleep in my bedroom with me. His litterbox, bed, food and water, etc are all in my bedroom like they were at my parents house.
I started dating a new guy recently, and he legitimately likes my cat, always pets and plays with him, and my cat seems to like him. However, my boyfriend doesn't like sleeping with my cat in the room. He's too polite to tell me straightforward, but I know he isn't sleeping well and he asked me if I always sleep with my cat in the bedroom. Now, I'm used to the noises my cat makes at night and have heard it for so many years that I don't notice it anymore and can sleep through it fine (kibble crunching, litter box digging, jumping up and down on the bed, etc) but I get that it can be a lot for someone who hasn't lived with a cat, so I've started shutting him out of my room when my boyfriend sleeps over. I put his litterbox, food/water, and bed in the living room.
He hates it. He cries the ENTIRE NIGHT outside my door. I feel so bad, but I'd also like to keep my relationship intact for now.
Does anyone have any advice on how to get my cat to calm down and go to sleep like usual?
