hairball questions

Both my boyfriend and I own cats, one each, and we've recently moved in together. The amount of times his cat throws up per week is something ive never seen. Both of our cats are short hair mixes with a little fluff. My cat is 2 years old and I've had her since she wad a kitten and have never seen her throw up a hairball, his cat (age 4) throws up on average about 5 times a week. I thought this was due to us moving in together at first and introducing our cats but he said it's normal and his last cat used to throw up just as often. Besides the cat I own now I have owned other cats who have also never thrown up. Ive been brushing and cleaning his cat but to no avail. She is on a high end cat food that should help with this while my cat has always been a friskies cat (my cat would apparently rather starve than eat high end food so they dont eat from each other's bowls) He thinks im making a big deal out of nothing since "All cats have hairballs" Have i just been lucky that none of my cats have had this issue or is 5 times a week actually not normal?
