Heart worm treatment

This is not a post asking for advice or anything, more of a talk through maybe? Maybe I just want to know I'm doing the right thing. And also if any of you have had success with the treatment I'm thinking of doing.

My old boy has just tested positive for heartworms. I know, I know. I'm not asking for a lecture.

He is 13. My thoughts are that I'm not sure I want to put him through the intensive treatment. I'm not sure he could handle it, and from a practical standpoint, I don't think it will add any years to his life.

That being said, I'm thinking of going the slow kill method. It will take way longer, but it's not so hard on the body. I'm wondering if anyone has tried this and how successful they were.
