I have a new 11wk/12wkish old kitten. The first week or so that we got her, she was extremely calm and sweet - later I found out it was because she had giardia and a kitty cold, so that's probably why she was so calm. Now that she is feeling all better, she is extremely hyper and she won't calm down.
I know she is a kitten and that is what kittens do (and yes, it's just her and no other cats/kittens around). But I have to wonder how much is normal.
My boyfriend and I play with her a bunch, lot of wand toys, lots of fun toys around the house, etc. We follow the whole, "playtime followed by giving her a meal" so she will then groom and sleep thing, but it's like we play for over an hour, we feed her, and then she is back to being wild. It's as if she completely skips the groom and sleep part. We can't even sit on the couch without her jumping around, clawing and biting our clothes or going after hands and feet or biting through blankets.
She's at a stage where she doesn't realize what reflections and shadows are, so ANYTHING that moves and makes a shadow, she will attack. She gets the wild eyes, and just goes crazy.
However, when I go into my room at night or I am at work, I keep an eye on her through a kitty cam - and when she is left to her own devices, she is really calm. She will play with stuff, but she is much more chill alone so it feels like she gets hyped up only when my boyfriend and I are around with her.
Is there anything we can try to help? Playtime does not tire her out, at all. I don't know if we aren't playing with her enough (she gets more than 3 40 min. - 1.5 hour playtime sessions a day) or maybe she isn't eating enough? The shelter told me to free feed dry food and give her wet food (2 tablespoons twice a day). That almost doesn't feel like enough, but I don't want to overfeed her.
If this is just normal for a kitten, then I can deal with it, I knew kittens were hyper (never had one, only older cats previously) but if there was something I could do to try and get her to be calm and stop attacking us when we are just trying to snuggle on the couch and watch TV, that would be great.
