People considering a pet, do your pet owning friends ever tell you NOT to do it?

My wife and I have been thinking about getting a dog for a while. We were super close to signing a foster agreement to begin fostering too. We're just a little concerned that since we both from 9 to 5 ish on most days that we won't be able to be responsible pet owners. The thing is that a lot of our friends/family with pet experience seem to not want us to get one?

We have a couple that is close to us in age that owns an adult Corgi and my in laws own a Terrier Maltese puppy. Neither of them recommend we own a dog. Has anyone else had this happen?

What is the reasoning? I kind of get the sense they think it's not worth the effort but I can't tell for sure as none of them are willing to elaborate.
