Okay, I (F23) took my dog (M13) to this event for dogs and it was basically a lot of vendors and a TON of dogs. He's pretty calm and slow due to his age. He was a little nervous at first but, he saw that my boyfriend (M24) and I were there with him so he just walked with us, with no problem. We walked by this one vendor and there was another family with two other dogs. My dog just walked by, didn't even sniff any butts (not really his thing from what I've assumed) and the larger dog (twice his size, he's a medium size dog about 65 lbs.) And grabs his side in his mouth attacking him. At this point I'm panicking, this dog wants to kill my dog, my baby!! The owner is try to get his dog away from mine and the only thing that gets them apart is a vendor that had a taser (he only made the sound, didn't actually tase the dogs).
My dog is crying and creaming basically and after the dog let's go, all I could do is sit there and hold him while he was still crying from the pain. I ended up getting blood on my face, my arms and I couldn't stop shaking. Several people came over to check, some one ran and got a vendor that was actually a vet and another vendor came over and helped me rinse my dog off with water, where he was bit.
After a little bit I went over and talked to the other family. They said their dog has never been aggressive like that or else they wouldn't have brought him. Which I understand and I told them I couldn't live with myself if I were the reason they had to put their dog down. Their dog was their baby much like my dog is mine.. so I exchanged contact information and I've kept on contact. They're really cooperative and really nice. Even told me to let them know if I take my dog to get antibiotics for any infection if he gets one.
My dog is still healing. He has 3 puncture wounds and a scrap from where the dog bit, I shaved and trimmed the area, I've been rotating having a bandage with Neosporin on it (I talked to someone I know who works for a vet) and I let it breathe for about half the day.
Questions:
-
Did I handle this properly? Is there something else I should have done or said?
-
What are some of the best ways to avoid an infection and keep the wounds clean for my dog? He keeps trying to lick it when I'm not watching him..
-
Are there any extra steps I should take either between me and the family or with my dog?
Any advice is appreciated. I've never had my dog attacked before.. before anyone says anything negative about the family, it wasn't their fault.
