New cat is yowling at night and meows at me but hisses the moment he smells me. Is this normal?

I’ve had cats before (my whole life) but this cat seems particularly nervous. (Sure he smells my old cat that passed a month ago so it may be adding to the issue) I’ve adopted him and today is the second day so I’m not too worried about the behavior at the moment. I let him out of the carrier he immediately hid underneath the bed which is fine. I tried being out of my room as much as possible and let him try to accumulate. I put litter and water/food near him. Both nights he ventured out and yowled (again normal, while irritating cause it’s 3am, that’s fine) He came up to me tonight like he wanted pets and meowed at me. I put my glasses out so he could smell the ear part and he sniffed and immediately hissed (fine ok) I backed off as much as I could considering I’m on my bed. (Each time he seems like he’s meowing at me I talk softly back.) He then walked away and I went to close my bedroom door so he’s got the rest of the house to explore without me being a stressor. He immediately started coming towards the bed again meowing and almost looked like he was gonna jump the bed for pets and smacks me without claws and hissed. I waited till he’d gone out to the hall shut my bedroom door and he immediately started pushing against the door and sniffing.

From what I understand, he’s never been apart from his family I adopted him from and never been introduced to other cats (my cat is dead but I’m sure his smell is there). He’s personality is a bit skittish already.

I’ve adopted before but all my cats I’ve had got used to us fast. This is the first time I’ve encountered this. I’m reading this is fairly normal but I’m a bit worried about the aggression. I’m gonna try to put him in a complete different room from me but not sure what else I can do
