Please help. We thought our cat loved dogs, but he is extremely stressed around our new pup. I feel like I ruined my cat's life and am full of guilt.

My boyfriend and I have had a cat for two years. He is three and the absolute light of our lives. We adore him, he cuddles with us all night, has the run of the house, the whole nine yards. And now that I am finishing grad school and my boyfriend is starting his career, we wanted to add a dog to our family. I grew up with dogs and love them, and it seemed like the perfect time.

And what's best (or so I thought) is that our cat is great with dogs!

Until today.

We just brought home a 10 month old lab mix from the shelter. the sweetest girl. Totally mellow. Just a love bug. We thought it would be perfect.

We did make a mistake. We introduced them (her on a leash), but in the same room. Our dog was fine, she just basically ignored him. Our cat, on the other hand, freaked out. Back arched, tail puffed, growling. He has NEVER done that before - he is a super chill cat, loves other people, gets along with my parents dog. So it was shocking. They are now separated and we are starting the whole process over again.

Did I just ruin my cats life? Should we return our dog, even though we love her so much?

I never thought I could be the person to bring an animal back to the shelter, but I cannot bear to think our cat will be stressed and anxious forever. He deserves a happy life.

Can someone calm my anxiety? I've been crying to my boyfriend for the past couple of hours, full of guilt.

Thank you so much in advance for your advice
