My family has been renting a home from landlord for going on three years! We have a good relationship with the landlord although there is a no pet policy.
When we first moved in we had a hamster, never tried to hide it, due to the fact we thought the no pet policy referred to cats or dogs. In fact we had the hamsters cage out in the living room and I’m almost certain it was seen when the landlord came over for maintenance, and nothing was ever said. We also have a fish tank that is on the book shelf that is right beside the front door, so I know that has been seen as well.
Well as my son is getting older we wanted to get him a family pet, a cat or a dog. A couple months ago, out of respect for our landlord we asked if we could get a cat, his answer was no and that he would prefer us to have a dog over a cat (for whatever reason) well six months or so passed and we were considering a dog, asked the landlord again, and was told no, once again, even though he previously stated he preferred a dog.
So my family came to a cross roads, we really wanted a family pet but knew cats and dogs were off limits so what did we do, we decided to get a rabbit!! Figured that wouldn’t be an issue since we have had a fish and a hamster, but we were very wrong!!
When cleaning up some paper work I came across a copy of our lease and it clearly states, NO PETS INCLUDING RODENTS AND FISH!! Seriously, no fish? That’s a bit crazy!
So now I’m so confused and have no clue what to do! If there is a strict no pet policy why has the landlord never said anything about the hamster or the fish? What do I do? I do not want to have to get rid of the rabbit, as my five year old son has fell in love with him! And I really don’t want to move!!
What do you suggest? Try to hide it and end up getting caught and in trouble or just leave it in the open and if it becomes and issue say we didn’t know.
But here is the loop hole, when looking at my lease, it ended almost two years ago, when it ended we never signed a new lease and just planned to go month to month from that point on. Does that mean the rules on the lease no longer apply?
Please help!! And if you have ever hid a pet from a landlord how did that go? Tips or tricks? Did you get caught?
Thanks so much!
