Although this isn't necessarily my opinion, it seems that dogs are considered the quintessential pet in the United States (with cats following at a close second). By quintessential, I mean most popular/thought of. Is it like this in other countries around the world? Where does this come from?
I did some googling and only found this one article that ranked what countries had the most dogs and cats. Also good to mention it was written by an American, meaning dogs and cats were put at the forefront.
