Backstory:
Max is a 3 y/o domestic male car. He's neutered and indoors. We had him and his brother Boris since they were 14 weeks old. They are not rescues.
Max has always been a very scared and nervous cat for some reason, but he's always had a great friendship with me and my husband. The cats are our babies.
Main issues:
A couple of days ago, Max started becoming really scared of my husband (and me to a certain extent). He will run way, hiss or growl, when my husband gets near him. He has never hissed or growled at any of us before!
When my husband feeds them, however, Max does not show this behavior and will even allow my husband to pet him. When it comes to snacks, Max will accept snacks from my husband but growl or kiss at him once there are no more snacks.
Max will get certain a look in his eyes and then run/growl/hiss. He hasn't hissed or growled at me, but he has gotten that look with me and I've then backed off. He does seem much more comfortable with me, though.
We're not sure exactly why the behavior started. We think maybe it's because my husband popped some balloons the other day but we're not sure. We can't think of anything else that would have scared him.
My husband and I are both really sad about the situation. We love Max to death.
How can we/my husband rebuild our relationship with Max and regain his trust? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
