TL;DR - Girlfriend turned off ceiling fan that is usually always on, cat watches it stop, now deathly afraid of ceiling fans (on or off)
While I was at work today I receive a snapchat from my girlfriend at around 7:30am (we live together). One of our cats Luna, not quite 1.5 years old (adopted @ 10 weeks old), was laying on the bed when girlfriend turned off the ceiling fan because she was cold. She explains in the snapchat how Luna was watching the fan come to a stop, head going round and round until the final stop. At this point, Luna took off like a banshee into the living room but then turned around and stood in the door way, staring intently at the fan, then took off again nowhere to be found. She didn't think anything of it because Luna has NEVER shown any interest in ceiling fans and ours is mostly ALWAYS on unless girlfriend gets cold and turns it off. Plus, Luna is our wild child and it's not uncommon for her to just zoom zoom around.
Fast forward until 2pm when I get home and Luna is on our stairway (living room fan out of sight) and follows me up the stairs. Literally every day that I come home from work I open the door to our screened in patio for both of our cats to go out and chill. Luna is always the first one out the door to roll around on the concrete, which she did without fail today. Mid roll, she notices the ceiling fan in the living room, freaks out, and hauls ass behind the couch. I try to lure her out with toys, nope. Treats, just peeks her head out enough to eat them and then go back to her safety of behind the couch.
Finally our other cat joins in on the toys that I'm trying to use to get Luna out, and that makes her curious so she comes out. I grab her and hold her to my chest and her head immediately goes to the fan and she starts squirming hard. I pull her to my chest and whisper sweet nothings to her to try to get her to calm down but it does nothing. She escapes and destroys my arm with her back paws while doing so, running back to behind the couch.
I figure I'll give her some time and see if she comes out on her own. An hour and a half passes and she hasn't moved. By now I figure I need to get her out because I doubt she's moved most of the day and hasn't gone to the bathroom because she has to pass two ceiling fans to get to her box. I manage to lure her out again, blocking her view with my body as I pass the living room and into our bedroom closet where her box is. I shut the door and put her down in which she immediately jumps in the box and pees for a solid 20 seconds, covers it, then poops too. Poor girl has been holding it in all day. She's all done so I open the closet door, eyes immediately go to fan, she runs back behind the couch.
When we adopted Luna, we already had a cat that I previously adopted 14 years prior, so her safe haven was our bathroom during the introduction process. So currently, Luna is back in her bathroom with food/water and her own litter box, refusing to leave because of the big bad fan in our bedroom. I'm at a loss as to what to do for our poor girl.
