My 1.5 y/o male cat is otherwise healthy. However, he recently developed smelly breath and red gums, which his previous (bad) vet said was just gingivitis. Well, a different vet says he has caudal stomatitis, and the only treatment is a full mouth extraction. I trust her judgment, she's a very good vet. However, she said it will most likely cost $3-5K, and that number will be the same almost anywhere nearby (southern California).
When I first got a cat, of course I made sure to budget for vet expenses. However, I didn't plan for my cat to end up with a chronic autoimmune condition. $3-5K is way, way out of my current budget.
Has anyone else dealt with cat stomatitis? Is it really that expensive to get all their teeth extracted? Could there be any harm in waiting a few years? The vet didn't entertain the idea of putting it off, but that's kind of her job. My cat is still eating and playing just fine, and the vet said he still looks great otherwise. I don't want him to be in pain, of course, but I literally can't afford that treatment, and the vet didn't say there were any other options.
