We are both in our mid 30s and I do love cats, I love all animals. But I am upset she would bring in a long term commitment without even talking to me first.
When I was 19 a girlfriend I lived with did this same thing, he was so rambunctious we had to get a second cat to calm him down. I still have both of those cats to this day 16 years later. So for her to just bring home a cat just brings back memories of my ex doing this. While I dont hate the cat, I didnt want another cat, not for awhile anyway. Now we are stuck with him and I'm honestly considering breaking up with my girlfriend of 4 years over this.
We never fight or argue and I had been considering proposing, but this makes me question the whole relationship. How are you going to commit me to this long term pet without talking to me. Bringing home a puppy or cat is cute, when you're a kid, it's not cute when you're in your 30s.
The cat is very sweet and affectionate and I cant possibly just return him, but I also dont want the responsibility right now. I'm working 6 days a week and trying to save money. I may not even go out with her tonight like we had planned for weeks cuz of this, I might just go home and give myself some space.
How would you feel if your SO did this?
TL:DR; girlfriend brought home a new cat as a surprise last night. I still have the 2 cats my gf from 16 years ago brought home in the same fashion. 4 year relationship marriage was on the table, now I'm thinking about ending it over this. Really upset about being forced into a long term pet commitment without any discussion before hand.
