HELP - I don't know how to fix dog's potty behavior

I have a dog that has access to the outdoors all day and for years was great about taking himself out to the bathroom when he needed to go. However, this year, he has been a problem. It started with him using the garage to go pee and poop. It has since progressed to inside my house. He peed on our Christmas tree multiple times and has peed on other things that were on the ground in the past couple of days. I clean up the pee as soon as it is found with pet cleaner and I have been cleaning our carpets every time we find another pee spot. I know that you are supposed to catch dogs to stop this behavior, but that is the main area of issue. He waits until I have left the house or until I have gone to bed to go potty inside. If I'm home and awake, he will take himself outside like he should. But when he knows I am not able to catch him, he gets lazy. Anyone have good ideas on how to fix this?
