I need some advice. Recently, I’ve signed a lease for a one bedroom 620 sq ft apartment. Back in June, I adopted a neutered male cat (now about 9 months old) named Pizza who is a very outgoing and friendly cat. He was introduced to my parent’s cat, Abigail, who had been an only-cat for 5 years (but had co-existed with dogs just fine). They get along alright, though Pizza tries to initiated play more than Abigail would like, but usually they keep to their own spaces as Pizza has plenty of interaction with the rest of my family to keep him busy. I know he will be very bored when he moves out with me as he has never been on his own. Personally, I also just like the thought of having at least two pets.
Trouble is, there’s about a month until I move out and in the last week we have had severe cold weather. I’ve been checking out shelters for possible matches (cat friendly, playful, young) as an additional cat but with the current weather, all of our local shelters have been swamped with rescues and are in desperate needs of fosters/adoptions to make space. I thought I would first move, bring Pizza in after a week once all has adjusted, then see how he does for about a month or more and once he’s adjusted to the move then bring in new cat. I don’t anticipate he will react negatively to the move as he enjoys car rides, has been in his cage plenty of times, and was perfectly fine after two days when I first brought him home. But now I’m thinking – would it be more beneficial to bring in the new cat early? We have a basement and if I could keep the new cat in the basement, let it adjust, and allow Pizza to interact with it slowly over time until the move, then I could adjust them to the new apartment (separated initially but then re-introduce), would it be better? I will not introduce Abigail to this cat as I know she doesn’t enjoy Pizza very much. I feel bad in that I know, eventually, I will be adopting a cat and there’s the potential to help my local shelters by freeing up a space.
What should I do? Apologies if I sound ignorant, I’m trying to research this and find the best solution. I want to make sure Pizza is my priority, as is Abigail, but I just need to know if this is reasonable. Thank you!
