TLDR: I have a one-eyed FIV+ previously feral cat who refuses to even enter a litter box with a door. How do I train him to use it? It could be the difference between him staying and my mom putting him on the street.*
About a guest ago, my mom and I took in a one-eyed stray cat after he tested positive for FIV when we took him for trap neuter release.
We also have two small dogs, one of whom hates cats. As a result, we have a gate system where they get turns with different parts of our small house. The room that the cat is shut in is mine, especially after he adopted me as his person.
The problem comes from the litter box, which is also in my room since that’s the only room he always has access to. It has a hood but we took the door off. Even with litter mats its has to be vacuumed every couple days.
It was an unideal but working situation while I was out of state on a college internship for most of last year. However now I’m back and my mom wants him to use a litter box with a door. She tried this once before last semester, but he pooped on my bed in protest.
This morning my mom made me try to force him into the box, and you can guess how well that went. One bandaged wrist and a jumped (3 ft high) baby gate later (thank god the dog who hates cats wasn’t in that room) and I need help. Right now I’ve used cardboard to take the door open to try and get him used to it.
Any advice at all is appreciated. My mom has threatened to put him outside if he doesn’t use the box with a door. She’s done this before for different reasons and I’ve managed to talk her out of it, but I don’t want to risk it.
