How to adopt a healthy pet in the safest way

I've seen posts before of people on reddit looking to get a new pet and I thought I'd give some insight as someone who's adopted from both shelters, rescues, and breeders. Personally the safest route is to rescue. I know a lot of people push "adopt don't shop" for the purpose of saving animal lives but often the quality of these pets are better as well. They're affordable (non-profit), up to date on shots and preventative care, neutered/spayed and micro chipped. Shelter animals are required to be medically and behaviorally evaluated prior to being available for adoption and if the animal has any health issues they are required to disclose that information. Often if you do adopt a sick animal from the shelter they will cover the treatment for you. You also often get a decent history to animal's background. If you want a specific purebred you can usually find rescues that specialize for that breed. However maybe you cant find the dog you're looking for in rescues, maybe you want a brand new puppy? You can go the breeder route. If you want a healthy animal you will need to be extra cautious. Note that these animals are often very expensive. They can be anywhere from $500- $10,000+. Purebreds and dogs/cats from breeders are not guaranteed to be healthier or better as a pet in any way. You will also need to consider that these dogs/cats often do not come with medical records, shots, or neutering/spaying. You can still get a great pet from a breeder but its important where to look. When you adopt from the breeder its important that you go to the place your breeder has been raising their animals. Do not accept an animal from any breeder that refuses to let you view their place or the puppies' mother and do not adopt from pet stores or flea markets. Puppy/ Kitten mills are a horrendous business practice you will want to avoid. Sure that puppy you see at the local pet store may be cute but what if I told you the mother is stuffed in a small cage with 3 other dogs and gave birth to the puppy on the floor of the cage covered in urine, feces, and sometimes the remains of other animals. Disgusting! These dogs are often never seen by a vet prior to adoption and can often carry serious problems. Many pet stores like petland get their animals from mills. These animals are more likely to live shorter lives. Sometimes people hear this and this makes them want to "rescue" them. Don't! Buying puppies/kittens from them doesnt stop the practice. It only encourages them to breed more. Do not be afraid to reject an animal. Whether this be from the shelter, a foster, breeder, ect. adopting a new pet is a big decision! If you feel like this pet isnt the one for you or you dont have the ability to care for them you shouldn't adopt them. I know that you might feel bad for inconveniencing shelter workers, fosters, ect. but they'd much rather you say no to the animal than bring it home and find out they're not for you. I hope I could provide some insight and tips. Good luck to anyone looking for a new family member!
