Our adored pupper is 8.5yrs old. She’s in good health despite a pathological fear of vets. As she was a rescue, we aren’t sure what breed she is but is showing signs of slowing down a bit. My husband and I are talking of getting another pet to keep her company and ease the family transition to losing her in a few years. We were both raised with dogs and both our families always got a pup as the older dog slowed down. However, our dog isn’t a dog lover, sniffs and says hallo but generally wants to get away from them.
A few years ago, I found two half dead starving feral kittens in my front yard and took them in for two months, getting them healthy and strong and then rehomed them together. Our dog was brilliant with them, fascinated and gentle. She doesn’t chase cats in the wild or show much interest in general. So we are considering getting a kitten (plenty in our local cat rescue). This is simply a consideration, it’s not decided AT ALL.
I’m wondering if anyone has done this at all and how their older dog handled the new little family member. If it did the dog good or if this is a crazy ridiculous idea we should immediately forget about.
(We are responsible pet owners, we have the best insurance and will neuter and vaccinate and chip and all that).
