Timing for two kittens?

My boyfriend and I are both STEM PhD students in our first year. He has always had cats at home and I’ve had some small pets in the past. Currently he’s only home on weekends but this summer he’s hopefully going to be doing research and he’s in a field where he can do a lot of that work from home. I’m in the lab all day. We’d like to adopt two kittens this summer when he’s going to be home more so we can share in the cute kitten stage before we both are back at school more regularly. We wouldn’t leave them for more than a few hours at a time, etc. His summer break starts mid June so the earliest we’d want to adopt is mid May when my classes end. Trouble is, we have a week-long vacation planned during the second week in July. I’m wondering which would be better—to adopt kittens in May and let them get used to our place before we leave them with a sitter for a week (they’d probably be about 4 months by that point), or wait until after our vacation and have less time with them together as kittens (boyfriend’s classes would start up again in September)? We want to give our kittens a great start in their new home.
